An interview about scoring a silent film at the Berklee College of Music

From Science to Music

My name is Larry Hong, a queer Korean-American composer whose journey has been a bit of a winding path. I grew up in the South, studied Neuroscience at Brown, and then switched career paths and studied film and video game scoring at the Berklee College of Music. I got my start in the industry working as a composer assistant to Wendy & Lisa (from Prince and The Revolution), and have since then assisted a few other composers working on television series such as the police procedural Shades of Blue (NBC) and the animated series DC Super Hero Girls (Warner Bros).

My training in Classical piano, Taiko (Japanese drumming), and electronic music influences my hybrid style. I’ve always enjoyed listening to symphonies and soundtracks, and a structural, theoretical approach infused with an emotional touch is what inspires me to write.

"Hey Lune" is a playful twist on my Korean name, "Haewoon" - a name that often gets tangled in mispronounciations. It's a cheerful nod to those little mix-ups.

Larry’s ear for music is extraordinary. He has a natural feel for the narrative when he is composing. He is sensitive to subtleties in character development; therefore, he also realizes the function of a good score.
